WC Doctor Arrested For Fraudulent Billing; Time to Re-Check Those RX Bills

Another week, another doctor arrested for alleged workers’ compensation fraud.  Kafka? Law and Order?  Nope, just California compensation.

Douglas J. Abeles, M.D., has surrendered himself following the issuance of an arrest warrant rooted in 31 felony offenses.  The Alameda District Attorney is alleging that Dr. Abeles sent bills to insurers for procedures never performed.

According to the complaint, available here, Dr. Abeles set up several satellite companies to perform drug tests prescription compound drugs, including Physicians RX Network, Inc., Redwood Laboratory Associates, LLC, and Redwood Laboratory Management, LP, and, as alleged by the good folks at the Alameda County DA’s office, submitted bills for work and services never performed.

A quick search of the EAMS lien function reflects several thousands of dollars in liens by Dr. Abeles, and 17 pages of lies by Physicians RX Network.

If you’ve got bills from Dr. Abeles, Physicians RX Network, Redwood Laboratory Management or Redwood Laboratory Associates, it may be time to look closer at the bills before you take out the check book.

As always, your humble blogger wishes the district attorney good luck in the course of this case,
